Progress reports will soon be shared with the kids and their parents. </li><li>Result of half yearly examination for School going kids has been declared; all the kids have performed well and secured good rank. Parents of the kids went to school on result declaration day. </li><li>New syllabus for the second half of the year (January to April 2010) is being framed and the classes will commence 6th January onwards.</li><li>During Bal Sabha on 30 December, 2009, kids shared their resolutions and dreams for the new year. There will be a grand lunch on 5th January 2010 to welcome the New Year and to mark the beginning of new session at Parichay after a short break of 4 days from 31st Dec 2009 till 3rd January 2010. </li></ul><p><strong>Gyan Ganga Project on Mental Retardation </strong><br /> <br />After successful completion of orientation- cum-training program for the community workers and surveyors, survey work in two of the areas have started and is being conducted smoothly. Two of the community women have been trained to assist the surveyors during the survey. These women will assist during follow up, home visits, counseling and guidance sessions as well. They are well groomed now and have become confident enough to conduct such sessions. A change worth mentioning here is that outlook of the women who participate in such surveys has changed drastically. They look more like career women when they move in the area for survey and other project related works. </p>Puneetahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16316041093784977729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-32458659237353453382009-12-03T14:43:00.000-08:002010-01-17T09:26:45.042-08:00Parichay updates for Oct. & Nov. 2009<div align="justify">In last two months we have been able to conduct and complete awareness activities at school level and community level in one of the targeted area. I am sending you a presentation giving you glimpses of few of the activities.<br /><br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">In the coming two weeks there will be orientation and training program for the surveyors & community leaders and the first phase of survey will start in area I from 10 December 2009. Before that pamphlets and handouts on mental retardation will be distributed in area I.<br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">As a result of awareness drive in this area people have already started contacting us with mentally disabled kids. Case histories are being prepared for such kids and counseling and guidance sessions besides assessment of the kids are going on.</div><div align="justify"><br /></div><span style="font-family:Times New Roman;font-size:12;"></span><div align="justify"><b>Deepawali Stalls </b><br /></div><div align="justify">This year 16 stalls were put in 10 days in various corporate houses. Sale of Rs.1.10 lakh, almost double as compared to last year’s Deepawali sale, was recorded. This year we got a bulk order of deepawali gifts from one of the corporate house as well.<br /><br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">Like last 3 years volunteers from BITS Pilani took the products on consignment basis and put the stall. Sale of Rs.3060 was recorded.<br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"><b></b></div><div align="justify"><b></b> </div><div align="justify"><b>Solar Lights for Parichay kids </b><br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">In collaboration with Cosmos Ignite systems, 25 solar lights were distributed among Parichay kids. These lights have given a great relief to the kids from the pressure of finishing their school homework and assignments before the sunset as electricity supply in the area is quiet irregular specially at night.<br /><br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">With the availability of solar lights, we are planning to restart night classes for working youth and women of the community, which was at halt since last one year.<br /><br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">Solar light proved like a boon for Gyanodaya (the new centre which is based 4.5 kms away from the main centre) as that area does not have power supply at all. We have also increased the duration of classes at Gyanodaya.<br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"><b></b></div><div align="justify"><b></b> </div><div align="justify"><b>Cutting and Tailoring Classes </b><br /></div><div align="justify">In the month of October Cutting and tailoring classes have been reintroduced at Parichay. Rani, who was trained at Parichay three years back and later was sent to do diploma in cutting and dress designing, is conducting classes for the community women. Rani has already become financially independent, she works in handicraft unit of Parichay and does job work for an export house as well.<br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify">The classes are conducted thrice a week.<br /></div><div align="justify"></div><div align="justify"><b></b> </div><div align="justify"><b></b> </div><div align="justify"><b>Formation of Community-level Committee </b><br /></div><div align="justify">In the month of September 2009 a “community-level committee” was framed at Parichay. Members of women group, youth group and senior kids of Parichay are playing an active role as committee members. Monthly meetings are held and future plans and functioning of Parichay is discussed and responsibilities are distributed among the members for the forthcoming month. Proper record of proceeding of the meetings is kept in the meeting register. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-86209408052982615772009-09-25T05:09:00.000-07:002009-09-25T05:32:42.339-07:00Masalas from Parichay!Almost 5-6 years back, I found AID Delhi website and uploaded my parent's name as volunteers. Both of them being doctors wanted to get involved,help and contribute to the society.<br /><br />My mom and dad were invited by Vijay bhiaya for doing a medical examination of the kids and that's how I came to know about Parichay and Vijay Bhaiya. I still remember how happy mom was when she came back. She had bought a pen stand(which she still cherishes) and some masalas.It was a huge step for her as she had always believed in home made masalas!!!!<br /><br />She used them and became a big fan of the masalas. The flavor and aroma was awesome and they tasted just great and so pure.... and there in began an association which has grown over the years.<br /><br />I also use them and such stuff is just not available in the market. I never bought any amchur powder, dhaniya powder or jeera from the regular shops. Its always been Parichay and I know it would remain the same....<br />I vouch specially for Parichay's raita masala, yummy........you would have never tasted something so good!Akankshahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14596587298866381288noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-44796134527262363902009-09-21T13:15:00.001-07:002009-09-21T13:15:12.815-07:00Contact Parichay<form method="post" action="http://www.emailmeform.com/fid.php?formid=425435" enctype="multipart/form-data" accept-charset="UTF-8"><table cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" border="0" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"><tr><td><font face="Verdana" size="2" color="#000000"></font> <div style="" id="mainmsg"></div></td></tr></table><br><table cellpadding="2" cellspacing="0" border="0" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"><tr valign="top"> <td nowrap><font face="Verdana" size="2" color="#000000">Your Name</font></td> <td><input type="text" name="FieldData0" size="30"> </td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td nowrap><font face="Verdana" size="2" color="#000000">Your Email Address</font></td> <td><input type="text" name="FieldData1" size="30"> </td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td nowrap><font face="Verdana" size="2" color="#000000">Phone number</font></td> <td><input type="text" name="FieldData2" size="30"> </td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td nowrap><font face="Verdana" size="2" color="#000000">Subject</font></td> <td><input type="text" name="FieldData3" size="30"> </td></tr><tr valign="top"> <td nowrap><font face="Verdana" size="2" color="#000000">Message</font></td> <td><textarea name="FieldData4" cols="30" rows="10"></textarea><br> </td></tr><tr> <td colspan="2"><table cellpadding=5 cellspacing=0 bgcolor="#E4F8E4" width="100%"><tr bgcolor="#AAD6AA"><td class="label" colspan="2"><font color="#FFFFFF" face="Verdana" size="2"><b>Image Verification</b></font></td></tr><tr><td class="captcha" style="padding: 2px;" width="10"><img src="http://www.emailmeform.com/turing.php" id="captcha"></td><td class="field" valign="top"><div><font color="#000000">Please enter the text from the image</font>:<br><input type="text" name="Turing" value="" maxlength="100" size="10"> [ <a href="#" onclick=" document.getElementById('captcha').src = document.getElementById('captcha').src + '?' + (new Date()).getMilliseconds()">Refresh Image</a> ] [ <a href="http://www.emailmeform.com/?v=turing&pt=popup" onClick="window.open('http://www.emailmeform.com/?v=turing&pt=popup','_blank','width=400, height=500, left=' + (screen.width-450) + ', top=100');return false;">What's This?</a> ]</div></td></tr></table></td></tr><tr> <td> </td> <td align="right"><input type="text" name="hida2" value="" maxlength="100" size="3" style="display : none;"><input type="submit" class="btn" value="Send email" name="Submit"> <input type="reset" class="btn" value=" Clear " name="Clear"></td></tr><tr><td colspan=2 align="center"><br></td></tr></table></form>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-18293139528344450472009-09-20T10:23:00.001-07:002009-09-20T19:00:16.684-07:00Festivities at Parichay (Sept. 2009)<img alt="Festivities at Parichay (Sept. 2009) " src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/_mjg_F6wyh0k/SrZhq_HHnlI/AAAAAAAAGSk/0A47xtylYVU/s400/picnic%20at%20india%20gate%20308.jpg" style="float: left; margin-bottom: 5px; margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; margin-top: 5px;" title="Festivities at Parichay (Sept. 2009) " /><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">At Parichay religious issues are not discussed. But to move beyond close-minded boundaries Parichay celebrates all religious festival at the centre. On Friday,18th September Roza iftar party and beginning of navratri festival was organized.<br />
<br />
</div><div><div style="text-align: justify;">The last Friday of auspicious month of Ramzan is celebrated as Alvida, which is the most important day of fasting for muslims.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">'Navratri' is one of the most celebrated festivals of Hindu calendar. 'Nav' means 'nine' and 'ratri' means 'night'. The first three days of Navratri are dedicated to Goddess Durga (Warrior Goddess) These days represent the three different classes of womanhood that include the child, the young girl and the mature woman. This idea moves on Navratri to be a social festival at Parichay rather than merely a religious one.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Beautiful traditional wall sculpture of goddess Durga with cowdung, mud, cloth and paper was made by community’s elderly ladies and senior kids of Parichay. Senior members of Swayamsiddha Mahila Samooh and elder kids cooked delicacies like potato, Brinjal, Onion Pakoras, whole gram chat, fruit chat, moong dal halwa etc. for Roza Iftar Party. Senior kids from Gyonodaya, members of Parichay youth & women group and NFE III kjds enthusiastically participated in the event.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Navratri celebration will be on at Parichay for next nine days. Kids are planning to stage Ramlila at the centre in dance drama form.<br />

Located near shahdara area in Delhi. It’s continuously working for the improvement of child education, Literacy, resolving rural issues and development, quality education, supporting underprivileged families and their livelihoods, fighting against child marriages.<br /><br />To support this in addition to the undeterred dream of Vijay Bhaiya are networked and dedicated volunteers many of them not only spend their time, resources and energy but also share their skills teaching them to these students who are so much loving and fast grasping. Cultural exchange programs, awareness on HIV/AIDS and no of education trips are also a part of this program aimed at the organization’s mission and vision.<br /><br />The funding mainly comes from the in-house product sales as designed, manufactured and created by these little creative artists. Along with this a noble initiative taken by a few of society to sponsor the education of these children helps them to join regular schools too. Charity is not the concept of working at Parichay making these people high at self-esteem.<br /><br />Many of these students and their families have acknowledged the love for them showered by these noble people.<br /><br />I Wish them Good Luck and best blessings for all the cherished dreams and aspirations of these little stars and the team behind.<br /><br />regards,<br />Navneet SomaniPuneetahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16316041093784977729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-82329439689187332332009-09-19T21:01:00.001-07:002009-09-20T20:49:40.185-07:00Requesting you to Support us for Deepawali Stalls 2009<a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/19969862/Parichay-Catalogue" style="-x-system-font: none; display: block; font-family: Helvetica,Arial,Sans-serif; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 12px auto 6px auto; text-decoration: underline;" title="View Parichay Catalogue on Scribd">Parichay Catalogue</a> <object align="middle" classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=9,0,0,0" height="500" id="doc_172717760906385" name="doc_172717760906385" width="100%"> <param name="movie" value="http://d.scribd.com/ScribdViewer.swf?document_id=19969862&access_key=key-2o2upl5zwby91h9j4d5s&page=1&version=1&viewMode="><param name="quality" value="high"><param name="play" value="true"><param name="loop" value="true"><param name="scale" value="showall"><param name="wmode" value="opaque"><param name="devicefont" value="false"><param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff"><param name="menu" value="true"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><param name="salign" value=""><embed src="http://d.scribd.com/ScribdViewer.swf?document_id=19969862&access_key=key-2o2upl5zwby91h9j4d5s&page=1&version=1&viewMode=" quality="high" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" play="true" loop="true" scale="showall" wmode="opaque" devicefont="false" bgcolor="#ffffff" name="doc_172717760906385_object" menu="true" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" salign="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" align="middle" height="500" width="100%"></embed> </object> <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">Awareness programs at school level under awareness phase of Gyan Ganga project on mental retardation have been initiated and are moving in full swing in the local schools of the area. Senior kids of non formal education program, community teachers and other volunteers accompany Vijay Bhaiya to the programs. <br />
<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">They engaged school students in several group activities to inform them about various types of disabilities, and how such kids need to be dealt with. Aids like flip charts, posters etc were used for presentation of concepts. Various group activities are being done with the students to make the program more interactive and enjoyable. Besides students the principal of the school, teachers and other staff members are taking active part in various activities including group discussions.<br />

came up with stories about some mentally challenged kids residing in their neighborhood. They were advised to bring details of such kids and to motivate the parents of such kids to contact Gyan Ganga project’s office for further consultation, advice and guidance. Parents of mentally challenged kids have already started turning up for guidance and counseling. Kids are taking active part in slogan and essay writing competition. They hanged and pasted their posters on the notice boards and walls of the school building. Short Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) sessions are held for kids to ascertain their awareness level on issues related to mentally challenged kids. Prizes will be distributed to those who demonstrate exceptional knowledge. Parichay also plans to involve such kids in the awareness program.<br />

We intend to create the necessary awareness among teachers, students and school authorities, so that they can identify such kids and refer them to Parichay. The initialization of the project has been already delayed by three months. The project was scheduled to start in the month of April 2009, as the schools in India can indulge in extra-curricular activities only in the month of April, when the new session starts. While AID has approved funds for this project and the first instalment of the same was transferred in the month of December 2008, the project could not be kicked off due to some technical (bank-related) problems. We received the first instalment in the month of May 2009. At that time, all the schools were having summer vacations and hence the awareness program got delayed further. As a result, we could start with the initialaization process of the project in the month of July. Meanwhile during summer vacations, we finalized the list of schools to be targeted and have started contacting the targeted schools. The awareness program at school level will now start after 15th August. A group of 10 adolescent boys and girls is ready to support the activities at school level. We are ready with presentations, handouts and flip charts. A team of community workers has been finalized and the team members will soon attend an orientation-cum-training program in the last week of August. The total budget of the project is 2.63 lakhs, we have received a support of Rs.1.52 lakhs from AID Pittsburgh. We still we need to arrange the rest of the funds (i.e. Rs.1,11,000). Another organization, New Life Centre, working in the area of physical and mental disability has happily agreed to render technical support needed in our project. For assessment and referral cases of the kids with mental retardation, we are trying to establish a tie up with various other organizations. Rakhi stalls During the month of July 2009 kids were busy in designing and making rakhies for Rakshabandhan stalls. Total sale of Rs.39,590/- was recorded from stalls at Mentor graphics, XL Gurgaon, STM, and CSC (Noida). Parichay volunteer Himanshu and senior kids (Rani, Jaseem, Bulbul, Roshnara and Radha) played an active role in putting up and maintaining the stalls. Rakhies amounting to Rs.5,000 were supplied to other buyers and organizations. Community ladies and other senior kids shouldered the responsibility of smooth functioning of routine activities (Non Formal Classes, Masala unit, Embroidery unit, Nutrition program etc) at Parichay, while Vijay Bhaiya was away from the project. Requirements at Parichay As always, there is a paucity of volunteers at Parichay. With the kick off of new project and responsibilities, the need for volunteers is felt more strongly than ever before. Volunteers are also required to teach English and Maths to the sponsored students who are enrolled in regular school. Both computers at Parichay need repairs. </span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-87640043674308052852009-07-31T22:36:00.000-07:002009-09-19T22:37:28.291-07:00Parichay - Rakhi and Handicrafts stall at CSC, July 2009<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&hl=en_US&feat=flashalbum&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Faid.delhi%2Falbumid%2F5364676501393513649%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-54063629483446035222009-07-28T22:35:00.000-07:002009-09-19T22:36:09.104-07:00Parichay July 2009<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&hl=en_US&feat=flashalbum&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Faid.delhi%2Falbumid%2F5363544728061130593%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-49911420659620158442009-06-29T22:37:00.000-07:002009-09-19T22:38:19.504-07:00Parichay June 2009<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&hl=en_US&feat=flashalbum&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Faid.delhi%2Falbumid%2F5352862267014899633%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-20379982049326448072009-03-29T22:39:00.000-07:002009-09-19T22:39:36.542-07:00Volunteer Meet at Parichay march 2009<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&hl=en_US&feat=flashalbum&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Faid.delhi%2Falbumid%2F5318827106990999569%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-17947265655145250912009-02-23T22:44:00.000-08:002009-09-19T22:44:52.296-07:00Gyanodoya<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://picasaweb.google.com/s/c/bin/slideshow.swf" width="400" height="267" flashvars="host=picasaweb.google.com&hl=en_US&feat=flashalbum&RGB=0x000000&feed=http%3A%2F%2Fpicasaweb.google.com%2Fdata%2Ffeed%2Fapi%2Fuser%2Faid.delhi%2Falbumid%2F5349952201991753889%3Falt%3Drss%26kind%3Dphoto%26hl%3Den_US" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"></embed>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-30773609707062949252008-08-15T20:19:00.000-07:002009-09-20T20:20:02.747-07:00Road less travelledParichay is an awe inspiring initiative by our dear Vijay Bhaiya and words are not enough to give a measure of his efforts. Every thought of Parichay gives me goose bumps although I am thousands of miles away. In today's world it's hard to find an initiative which has been nurtured with so much love and care. We always say children are the future, but do we actually do something for them apart from the occasional donations to some big NGOs, who spend huge sums of money on maintaining it's status.<br />
<br />
So who are these people behind Parichay ? Well, these people are ordinary humans with extraordinary motivation and the will to make this world a better place. It's a family of talented children, motivated individuals and many well wishers. In the last eight years Parichay has tasted so many successes that it has inspired many many people to be the winds of change directly or indirectly. Like many good things Parichay has also faced it's share of problems, but Vijay Bhaiya and the children of Parichay have stood tall, and faced them with smiles. Over the years Parichay has seen many "real heroes" like Krishna, Somendra, Puneeta, Selva, Sambit, Deepti and many others to come forward and support it's cause with a great deal of passion and conviction.<br />
<br />
I salute the beautiful world of Parichay, and pray that the real values of life continue to be preserved through initiatives like this. Last but not the least, I would like to request all the readers who haven't been to Parichay to visit it atleast once, and talk to Vijay bhaiya and the children; your life will surely change for good.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-74329541340114717662008-04-23T20:25:00.000-07:002009-09-20T20:26:29.730-07:00Climbing Rainbow with a Boat of Smiles<div style="text-align: justify;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; font-size: 13px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 19px;">If I have to describe my experience on Parichay-Trip then it's more like "feeling sunshine on my nose in cold bitter dilli ki sardi" …: P because for me this is the most comforting thing I can think of :)</span></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; font-size: 13px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 19px;"><div style="text-align: justify;">Parichay kids always impressed me with their open heart warm attitude, they welcome everyone with same respect and captivating smiles.. but on this trip I was little more lucky that I saw their "Live Life with Life" attitude.</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I used to wonder how they retain their cheerful disposition with so many things happeing in their life and on this trip I got my answers...</div><div style="text-align: justify;">When we started our trip it was drizzling outside and when we reach Parichay Center we saw another shower of giggles … I don't think I can confine their excitement for this trip in words :)</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ganga Ghaat become more alive with kids playing with water, pebbles and when sparkling rays of their smile encounter with shimmering water of gaga it was a sight of a wonderland where everything is shining and I was mesmerized :) Every kid in Parichay has different color and for a painter like me it is almost like feeling a painting ..feeling colors .. and I truly believe no painting can be as beautiful as this one ..:)</div><div style="text-align: justify;">For me Parichay -Trip is just started :) looking forward to see more colors ,feel more smiles and more love although they have given me so much :) but being human I couldn't resist myself asking for more.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Packed with 16 kids, their entusiasm was going to match mine at any point of time. I was eager to see the games children play, had in mind a game or two. My game would be something to do with role playing, a military invasion and capture of a hill, or a cab full of pirates in search of the heart of a sea monstor, or Don Quixote attacking a windmill. The thrid idea broght me back to my senses and i smiled at my imagination. I did get to do all those things, but more like a commando and less like a captain with backup. I was later to find out that i was not in hollyood, but more in bolly or molly wood, for we had a don with a haircomb and a god with a cellphone. Both very fond of camera, inadvertently didnt cross each others path during much of the trip. A strong clout followed both the god and the don; and in this plot, i considered myself as ....</span></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #666666; font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; font-size: 13px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 19px;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">To make myself clear, I will shread the cryptic writing style for a while. The god being Selva, belongs to a quaint South Indian town that cooks it just right. It familierity with the food lovers is for discovering a bland curry dish named Sodhi, mixed with rice seved with a more fiery porel.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Don would be Kailash, who unlike bad dons, sticks a comb in his backpocket. Well, has been never identified in a camera... in that line of work, its like that... with a bad hairstyle. He probably learns half his tricks at work and other half at Saloo's saloon. I hope he puts these tricks to good use. I would like a don change & turn himself in, for a desire to win the great indian comedy show.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I considered myself as a pilgrim travelling with the god, a preacher travelling with the don. Though neither of these was entirely my real identity, i acted them out suitably.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The condense of the two day trip can be compared an evening. A kid reaches the playground with an excitement and as the sun sets down returns home with heavy steps. The kiddos, went there all excited and returned as if it was sun set of an evening they wished would not end so soon. And under a decoy of going and comming back sleepy; because I collected information. Any top 3 presumptions made with this statement about my real identiy during the trip may still be wrong.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Just before we reached Delhi, I caught a glimse of Radha sitting in the other cab. It was the same smile with which she would radiate in the classroom, at the end of 2nd hour of my tough-to-digest lecture about relationship between puzzels and life. That promising smile for the future said so much; the big deal was not the trip that costed XXX bucks or the resturant that I was overwhelmed by, the big deal is living in the moment.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Walking like a man and hitting like a hammer, she looked like a confident, dynamic carrer woman in jeans - a side of Moni I had not seen before. I could almost imagine her speak with eloquence and finish like this, "your honour, i rest my case".</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Initially we had intended to go to Dehradun also. Dehradun is approximately 60-70 kms from Rishikesh. If children could be exposed to studies related to flora and fauna (wildlife) at that place, surrounded by both in plenty, the educational objective of the trip would be fulfilled from my stand-point. "Once a befuddled a wildlife resercher, found answer for a touch question in a comic book".</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">We did not go to Dehradun and only person I could teach about trecking was Manu (a volunteer). On our small trek to Nilkanth, we managed to get lost. You know how it starts, "I know a shortcut". A blind man wouldnt get lost on that one. We never found a shortcut, instead a skeleton pointing the long finger towards the road saved us. Perhaps, it was tired from the disco last night, 'the Skeletor disco'. Before we left our friend 'Skeletor', we changed the direction of its finger to the other side.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Looking back, I might have taken Sona to the treck. He might have been able to treck the distance at our pace. If there is a career for him in doing something like this, that would be real cool. Even if he looks like an adventurer to me, there are already too many people doing this stuff for a living. I guess one has to discover something, even if one does not have the formal education, and make a living. Its something about respect for oneself (maybe). To make a two day trip about dicsovery is not childs play.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Is a day at work similar to a day spent mountain trecking? In a work day, a person climbs to a peak and then comes down or finds a resting spot before the sunset. Then some days and on some trecks you dont reach the peak, return before touching it. Are their more similarities between a city day and a treck? While former is about mental exertion & team play, the latter is physical exertion & indivigual will power. In this bleak similarity, i find it important to note one point, "if you enjoy the path and the people along it, you can always return back contented, looking forward to the next day, weather or not you reached the peak".</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">- Naval</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The trip formed a bond between the cirle of volunteers. Had it not been for Parichay, they would not take my baloneey or agreed to look it from an artistic point of view. And I definately would have called them egotistic for not bearing with me. Parallely, that applies to little ghutkhi as well (her name escapes me). There was something different about her at the Book Fair and now when she went to Rishikesh. For proof lover, its a theorem that states that only the child inside you makes true friends. Sadly it is contradiction with adults is what makes a child. Meaning the child can put you at cross with adults, or wouldnt i be a child everywhere. Parichay, for me thats a place where the child feels safe.</div></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6468142372236100978.post-6808840782907205222008-04-21T20:24:00.000-07:002009-09-20T20:24:51.072-07:00Parichay At Rishikesh<div style="text-align: justify;">To me Parichay has been a whole new experience from the very first day I met with Bhaiya. He is so much to tell and i like listening to his experiences about Parichay and about the kids. <br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Parichay has given a lot to me in such a small time. I feel like being part of a new family. The smile on the faces of kids make me feel good too.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The trip to rishikesh was an altogether different experience for me. Finally i got a chance to remember the name of almost everyone i suppose by now. I tried this thing all the way round. <br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Enjoyed a lot during the whole trip. The fun at all the places we went was different in its own way. Made new friends and got a chance to know them.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">We went to Dehradun and Rishikesh. It was so peaceful and enjoyable with the kids. Enjoyed every moment in the trip from the point we started the journey till we came back was fun. <br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Treking on the way to Nilkanth was an amazing experience with Naval. Initially i wasn't at all afraid as i knew that we will find a way as we proceed but on reaching the top of the Peak we realized that there was no way we could go. From that point onwards things started to get a little bit horrifying. I was afraid (to tell u the truth) of getting down as it was not easy to get down. But we were lucky to find a way as we were coming down from the top. Gud luck. Then Shouting as if we had discovered America as Columbus did. :)<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The lunch , ride in the boat and walking besides those ghat besides the Ganga river was an amazing experience.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Then evening was also filled with loads of masti with the kids near Ganga river and then the arti that we attended in the evening with an awesome weather was tooooo gud to be true.<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The fun at lachiwala not to forget when a monkey took our chowmeen from behind :) and also the masti that we did there in the water for so many hours. <br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">All in all i enjoyed a lot being part of all this with such wonderful people at a wonderful place. A whole new experience. Thanks to everyone who were part of it. Thank u so much all...<br />

Not many of volunteer get a chance to start learning volunteering from Parichay. It was a fine morning when I, Somen and one more girl Priya met at IIT main gate to move to the project. It was one and half hour travel with the modes of bus, auto-rickshaw and cycle-rickshaw travel. Before reaching parichay itself I had a lot to learn from the road from bhajanpura to tukhmirpur. I could imagine and interpret the state of mind of the people at that place (though that was an imagination of an immature so called volunteer who was on his first sight visit).<br />
<br />
<br />
After all the way of travel when we reached the building with a block of bricks arranged on the front and loads of bundles of paper wounded and kept aside on both sides of the entrance. There were children all around with namasthe bhaiya and namasthe didi…while we entered into the block. Man I thought Somen must be a hero here; he got such a reception which I’ve earlier seen only in Rajnikanth movies on screen, a live experience.<br />
<br />
<br />
Once we stepped into the block on the left hand side we had / have a steep steps leading to the first floor…..I just imagined “Parichay is already on top”.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
A quick little flashback……. Me, Somen and Anirban used to have dinner quite often and during our dinner we talk about Parichay, AID, Volunteering etc., etc., we used to talk a lot about Parichay, the children and bhaiya…. I from there on had an imagination of Parichay with two separate rooms on a ground beautifully decorated with lots of charts having a small garden in front of it. Both the rooms surrounded with a series of flower pots [this is not my mistake, movies have shown things like that :D].<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Back to the situation, I started to realize that I’m realizingJ. [I mean the reality may be different from cinematic imagination]. Up we went, and walked on the corridor, passing the unfolded cots, the vessels waiting to be cleaned and the clothes just getting a bath. Vijay bhaiya was waiting there for us and with a warm welcome; we had an introduction with the children. I could remember, Monu, Tarannum, Moni, Heera and Sona were the people I recognized on my first visit. After a lot of talk, bhaiya said us you can go to the next room and teach the children.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I was a bit clueless on what to teach, but me as usual ready to take up the new challenge. Priya somehow managed to gather the children and start to teach them how to look at the watch / clock to read time. I start to interact to a few children and start to teach them English. I thought I’m smart enough to take English class and started with ‘A’. In came a question,<br />
<br />
<br />
“bhaiya yeh ‘A’ kyun hai?....<br />
<br />
<br />
I was just feeling like a air plucked balloon. Infact the children were smart enough to understand my feel and said “theek hai, aage batayiye”….<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I went there to teach the children and I was taught by the children that I’m not prepared enough to do so, it was a great learning from them and infact if this might not have happened that day, my entire experience of volunteering might have been different. Even today I go to parichay to learn and not to teach [though some times I share a few of my knowledge with children, I never call that as teaching].<br />
<br />

He started this project out of his sheer interest in social work, as he observed that most of the children in the locality do not go to school and the youth are an ignorant mass. The people lacked the sense of hygiene and almost all children suffered from one or the other disease. <div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">I came to Delhi about 4 years back and it was not until January this year that I finally took up something that I had really been craving for, for a very long time, which was 'volunteering' for a cause.</span><br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">In the course of those two days spent at Parichay, we did not teach them anything great but did let them explore, taught them techniques to make the already existing things better. Techniques that would help them cut down the cost of purchasing things from the market as they would now be able to make them. All of us worked with newer mediums, colors, yarns, paints, kinds of paper, scrap, junk and loads more. More them teaching them we were getting back to our roots, back to where we started from, back to the origins of creativity. The first day when the kids asked me to draw a butterfly I was embarrassed because its been 4 years that I have drawn one and I did not remember how to. And it was then that the realization struck me that these 4 years in the best fashion design college in the country has taught me so much but has taken away what I had and what I knew. </span><span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><br />

I have had a chat with Vijay bhaiya in this regard and have taught Rani a few techniques concerning the same. The packaging and presentation is an area of concern and needs more focus. Some accessory design students are ready to help out with new presentation techniques. Also certain products which are commercially viable and easy to manufacture have to be added on to the existing list of products, like larger backpacks, jholas, decorations for various festivals (since we are lucky enough to have loads of them), hand printed letter pads, mouse (computer) covers, paper lamps (an acquaintance selling at crafts museum is eager enough to help) and other ideas could be added on.</span><br />

<div align="justify">Date : 15 May 2004<br />
Place : Parichay Center, Tukmirpur, Bhajanpura, Delhi<br />
<br />
AID Troy had requested a visit to Parichay and see how we can possibly help them come out of the financial crisis that they were facing. </div><br />
<div align="justify">Parichay was started in 2000 by a Gandhian - Vijay Bajpai. He had gone to Tukhmirpur to a function and noticed that a lot of children who were playing around in the streets and not going to a school. He resolved to do something for them. Parichay has changed lives of at least 70 children since then. </div><br />
<div align="justify">Though the school/ center had holidays the children being locals were very easy to collect in one place - esp. when that place was their "Parichay" center. They are all well-mannered and one cannot but love them. They are all in the age-group of 5-16 years.</div><br />
<div align="justify">Vijay bhaiya uses music as a means to teach children. He has himself written poems to introduce children to the concepts of colors, alphabets and moral values. He has come up with a few books which help children learn in a very interactive and playful manner.</div><br />
<div align="justify">That Parichay has really changed lives is evident from a few incidents that Vijay bhaiya recounted to me. There is a student - Rani - who does some embroidery at home. While earlier the contractor would give her whatever he felt, when he recently come to give her something for embroidery, she pointed out that she should get more money for the more intricate work. She realizes today that her work has value and that she should get what she deserves. </div><br />
<div align="justify">In another incident, parents of the children who used to come to the center took their children and got them enrolled to a formal government school. These parents were earlier ignorant of the change education can bring to the attitude of their children, but when they noticed that their children enjoyed studying, they took the initiative to get these enrolled to a full-time formal school.</div><br />
<div align="justify">With the help of vocational training these children also make quite a few very beautiful handicrafts which help them earn some income from the sales. A part of the profits also go for the upkeep of the center for the salaries of the teachers. One can support the good work at the center by purchasing these handicrafts. The catalogue includes a wide range of products from handmade pen-stands, paper folders, lamp-shades, bookmarks, potlis, show-pieces to greeting cards and handmade paper dairys. To know more about these products please write to Krishna at sambit(dot)patra(at)st(dot)com.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
